First of all, Happy Birthday to Liz Herbert! She celebrated her birthday on Sept. 20th with a 2-day celebration. On Friday she was at her high school reunion and they turned it into a birthday party. The next day, the Daiquiri shop gave her another party. Liz rested on Sunday.
Barbara and I traveled to Florida to watch Southern University play Florida A & M University in Tallahassee, FL. Southern gave the game away. They had no defensive secondary, gave up two safeties and had almost no offence in the first half. Final score, 27 – 21 in favor of FAMU, after Southern had come back to lead 21 -20 with less than 4 min. to play. The half-time show, with both schools bands, was the highlight of the whole evening. The “Human Jukebox”(SU) played and marched excellent!
We had an excellent trip. Good weather from the time we left, until we got back. No trouble and our host, Rudy & Brenda Slaughter, would not let us spend a penny. They had fresh fish, smoked Cornish game hen, BBQ ribs and a lot of home cooked veggies and deserts. I gained about three lbs. over the weekend. We had per-paid parking spaces about two blocks from the stadium and seats about half way up on the FAMU side, at the 40 yard line. “Rudy” Slaughter retired from FAMU but is a graduate of Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, FL. Rudy also had many years of public service, both in Florida and in Washington, DC. Rudy and I grew up on the same side of Walnut St., about 4 houses away and graduated in the same class from Campbell High School in Daytona Beach. I went into the Navy, and he went to Morris Brown College in Atlanta, GA to play football. We have kept in touch over the past 60+ years as I have watched him climb up the ladder. Now he is enjoying retirement, along with his wife, Brenda, who is a retired teacher, and a super cook!
